The Spencer Foundation
For Spinal Cord Injury Research and Rehabilitation
(www.spencerfoundation.org) is committed
to helping prevent, cure and facilitate
rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries.
Each year, The Foundation awards a Medical
Investigator Award to a researcher dedicated
to innovative scientific inquiry involving
spinal cord injuries. Dr. Jan K. Richardson,
PT, OCS, Professor/Chief of the Doctor
of
Physical Therapy Division, Department
of Community and Family Medicine,
School of Medicine at Duke University
Medical Center, was the 2002 recipient
of the
$25,000 award. An orthopaedic certified
specialist, Dr. Richardson is a nationally
and
internationally recognized physical therapist
with expertise in the management of
spinal and peripheral joint impairment
and disability. Her evidence-based research
investigates the clinical ramifications
of spinal hyper- and hypomobility and
its relationship
to impaired movement and pain. Committed
to physical therapy and rehabilitation,
Richardson models the merging of practice
and research to develop interventions
that will improve the quality of life
for those suffering with spinal injuries.

Recent recognition
for a Duke PT and frequent guest lecturer
published in
DUMC Inside:
Duke joins the American
Hospital Association in recognizing the
vital role that
physical therapists play on the health
care team as part of national Physical
Therapy Month, which is designated as
every October. Matt Roman is just one
of the many dedicated and skilled physical
therapists at Duke. “The interaction
with
patients is the most rewarding part of
what I do because I get a chance to make
a
positive difference in their ability to
function,” says Roman, who also
coordinates
ambulatory services, a division of the
Duke Physical Therapy and Occupational
Therapy Department.
