DUMC Doctor of Physical Therapy: Women's Health

Women’s health physical therapy encompasses strategies and interventions to promote and advance health in women of all ages and populations. Physical therapists with specialized knowledge and skills are active in education, research and clinical practice addressing the unique health problems of women, such as:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pregnancy-related back pain
  • Lymphadema

Women’s Health Elective

The Women’s Health Elective is designed to introduce Physical Therapy students to a specialty area of Physical Therapy practice.

Class format includes lecture, laboratory, and review of literature.

Speakers represent the following disciplines: Physical therapy, Urogynecology, Endocrinology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.


Specific topics:
  • Female anatomy & physiology
  • Pregnancy, labor & delivery
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Examination & interventions for obstetric & gynecological symptoms
  • Female endocrinology
  • Surgical & pharmaceutical interventions for pelvic floor dysfunction

Research in Women's Health

Student-guided research activities past and on-going include:

  • Urinary Incontinence and pelvic floor muscle activity in elite female athletes
  • Prenatal measurements of posture
  • Physical symptoms and activity levels of postpartum women
  • Pelvic floor muscle activity and endurance among parous and nulliparous females
