DUMC Doctor of Physical Therapy: Life Around the Triangle

The Triangle, area which consists of Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill is a pleasant place to live and has been at the top of several "best places to live" charts because of affordable housing, culture, and vacation. Yes, students can actually own a home! Research Triangle Park, home of several high-tech industries and pharmaceutical companies, is found at the intersection of the Triangle.

Housing

Housing in Durham or Chapel Hill can be found within 10 - 20 minutes from the hospital. There are several apartment complexes nearby which also have exercises facilities and pools. Townhouses and home are affordable and conveniently located in communities around the city. Information about rentals or properties for sale is available in the Duke House Staff office.

Childcare

Childcare is available through multiple avenues. Duke runs its own childcare facility with extended hours - availability is limited. Most residents who have their children in daycare either have a childcare professional in their home, take their child to daycare provider, or use a professional agency. Home childcare providers in the Triangle area must be registered, have CPR training, and pass a safety inspection of their house.

Recreation

Recreational opportunities are plentiful on and off campus. Duke gyms, tennis courts, and pools are available to housestaff.

Sporting events are very popular because of the strong rivalry with our neighboring universities. A night at the Durham Athletic Park to watch a Durham Bulls game, an afternoon watching the women of the Carolina Courage play soccer, or the Entertainment and Sports Arena (ESA) to catch a Hurricane hockey match are popular pastimes among residents.

Golf courses can be found throughout the region. Parks and lakes are easily accessible within the city and county areas.

Music and dance flourish with the annual Broadway at Duke series and many other shows and concerts throughout the Triangle.

Getaways to the stunning Smoky Mountains to the west and the breathtaking Carolina Shores to the east provide excellent vacation opportunities. The nearest beach is only two hours away.

Travel

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport is conveniently located about 20 minutes from Durham and has direct flights to most major cities in the country.
